Not only was it adorable to see them falling in love, but it was also nice to know that before that point the marriage was still assumed to be a pleasant one. They were permitted a little bit of room to return home, relax, and be in each other’s company and they both learned that was all right to do! I also really loved the execution of the trope. Ellen needed to learn to be comfortable in her own authority and Marcus needed to learn to step out of his own assumed responsibilities. I liked that Ellen and Marcus both had some personal self esteem issues to sort out, and that their growth and plot wasn’t just about their marriage and falling in love. Not quite the slow burn that usually comes with this trope, but definitely still fun! Plot: Childhood Friends Make Arrangement Based on Other Friends’ Suggestion, It Goes Well Yep! Ellen and Marcus originally enter into a fake marriage! Sure, part of the book focuses on how they agree to this, but I’d say the majority of the book focuses on what happens after they’ve made their agreement. Yes, this whole series is set in the same set of a few years with characters that are interconnected clearly. Marcus and Ellen also discover new joy and life in their adulthood, rekindling childhood passions and enjoying their rebuttal of society together. It’s also about Marcus eschewing society and its expectations, despite his long held belief that he owed his brother–Lord Annesbury–assistance in the social arena. This romance novel is at its core about Marcus and Ellen’s rekindling of their relationship. Goodreads What is His Bluestocking Bride about? But of course, practicality can only last for so long… Marcus fulfills the requirements of obtaining his home, Orchard Hill, and a practical and intelligent companion who can also help him manage his home affairs.

And so the two enter a mutual arrangement: Ellen receives a guaranteed home, respect, and friendship from her husband. His mother will not relinquish his rightful property–Orchard Hill–until he marries. Marcus, for his part, has been issued an ultimatum. In fact, they have schemed to set her up with her childhood friend Marcus.

While Ellen has accepted her destiny as a spinster aunt, shuffled between her sisters’ families when needed to care for the children, it seems her cousin and friend have not settled on that themselves.
